If you can, ELI5.

Last year (2024 return) between my spouse and I we made a combined $116,256. He worked 1 part time job and I worked 2 part time jobs to equal 36 hours a week (considered full time in my field). Our federal return was $1,381.

I also had extra withholding taken out of my paychecks for federal. Job 1 was $25 and Job 2 was $100.

This filing year, spouse did not work, and I worked 2 jobs, 1 was 36 hours a week and the other an average of 9 hours every week (I did not make any OT). Our income came in at $119,473.

Job 1 had $50 additional withholding and job 2 is still $100.

I have a couple of 403bs that I contributed to both years. And then an HSA this year.

Our projected federal return is over $10,000.

    I’m flabbergasted.

We don’t own a home or land, don’t have any other income and no children or dependents. Neither of us are in school.

How am I getting so much?

      What do the forms say?

Also, a return is the paper/form. A refund is the interest free loan you get paid back.  Sometimes in detailed posts it’s important to make sure you say “refund” when you mean “refund”. It can help us understand what you mean.

Are you sure you filled out the forms correctly? As you’ve described it a $10k would be surprising.
