Hi everyone!

As the title says I tried to file my taxes for the first time and I was told by the system ID.gov that an account is already link to my information. When it showed the email I recognize it’s my adoptive dads email. I attempted to obtain the password from him and he won’t provided. I’m not sure how am supposed to become independent and do my taxes. Please help. Is there another way I can verify my identity to file my taxes?

Father made my ID.gov account and refuses to give me the password.

    1. Normally you don’t need to login to file your taxes. OP can you provide more context?

    2. If appropriate, you can print and mail your return with no IP-PIN.

If you don’t mark that you can be claimed as a dependent, then it will be up to your adoptive dad to deal with this. If you don’t meet the criteria to be claimed as a dependent, you could tell him about your plan. He may then see the wisdom of just giving you the PIN. On the other hand, you could print and file marking that you can be claimed as a dependent, and no negative consequence to him.

[https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/dependents](https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/dependents) are the rules as to whether somebody can be claimed as a dependent. Age is often an important factor.

Also consider working toward getting your own IP PIN.

Mailing can take longer that efile, and if two people are claiming you, even longer.
