hi all,

hoping i can find some answers for my parents on here.

Long story short, parents were deported( had a removal

order and left on their own in 2017)

they did not handle their 2017 tax and IRS sent a couple letters stating they need file.

since they arent able to come here, they’ve left it alone.

now in 2026, just received a letter from IRS on their behalf, stating that their overdue tax account has been assigned to a private collections agency.

parents are in their 60s and dont work in their homeland.

I know for sure they arent able to pay the tax and probably will not be able to come back for at least 5 ,6 years.

even if they came back, they’re too old to work.

however, when they left, they bought a home under their name and also has my brothers name on the mortgage.

Brother solely pays the mortgage alone and lives in the home.

question is: can the collection agency come after the home thats under their name and my brothers?

    ps:

Brother doesnt owe any tax to IRS.

    Thanks in advance all.

The IRS can sieze their interest in the home. They will likely put a lien on it. Penalties and interest will continue to accrue.

Recommend the brother protect his interest by finding out what is owed to the IRS and consider paying them off. After it is settled, parents should consider signing their interest over to him.

      Consult a tax professional.
