Hi all,
So this is my second year paying NC taxes (moved here pretty recently) and I filed through FreeTaxUsa. I owe the state around $1300 and I scheduled the payment via bank transfer for April 15th. Today, March 31st, my bank account was charged the $1300.
Now this is a major issue considering tomorrow my rent is due, and this tax payment took my entire paycheck. I called the NC Department of Revenue but it’s 7am and they open at 8. I left a voicemail, and hopefully they call me back while i’m on lunch at my 9-5.
Has anyone ever had this happen to them before? Was it resolved? I don’t want to be weeks late on rent as a result of this because my complex is not forgiving when it comes to late rent.
I just don’t understand WHY they would charge my card two weeks early, on FreeTaxUSA it specifically states that I will be charged “as early as 4/15/2026.”

As a VITA volunteer, I never tell clients to use the direct debit option. If the IRS or state tax agency takes the money early, there’s usually nothing you can do. Next year, file your taxes without paying and then pay manually online when you want the money to come out of your account. You can file and pay at different times as long as they are both before April 15th.
Feel free to try with NC, but I doubt they will refund the money quickly enough to help. Sorry that it’s putting you in a bind.
