Look there are a million sponsored comparison articles and they're all useless because they compare feature checklists without context. So here's how I'd actually think about picking software if I were starting a smaller practice right now.

Return types matter more than anything else. Individual with some Schedule C? Literally any major option handles it fine, just go with what's affordable. Complex entity stuff, multi-state, trusts, heavy K-1 work? UltraTax and CCH Axcess are stronger there. Drake is fast across the board especially for individual returns.

Desktop vs cloud isn't just preference. Cloud (ProConnect) means no installs and remote access but you're at the mercy of their servers and your internet. Desktop (Drake, Lacerte) is faster and more responsive. UltraTax has both now. If you have remote staff cloud has real advantages, if it's just you in an office desktop is probably better.

Budget reality: Drake most cost effective for small firms. ProConnect mid range. UltraTax and Lacerte pricier. CCH Axcess most expensive. Don't overextend your first couple years.

And honestly the thing nobody tells you… think about what you'll add later. Your core software is one piece. Practice management (karbon, canopy, taxdome), client portals, prep automation. Tools like filed that handle data entry and return drafting only work with specific tax software so check compatibility before committing. I almost went with a cheaper option and then realized none of the automation tools I wanted supported it which would've cost me way more in manual work long term.

Don't overthink it to the point of paralysis though. Any major professional option will work. Pick one, learn it well, build your practice. Clients don't know or care what software you use.

Choosing pro tax prep software as a smaller firm without overthinking it

This is what I needed. Been going back and forth between Drake and ProConnect for two weeks. Going Drake since I work from home and don’t have remote staff.

Quick question… for someone doing maybe 100 returns year one, mostly straightforward, worth getting automation right away or just manual it and add tools as I grow?
