I need to file for this year and 3 past years (2021, 2022, 2023). I did last years and they are paid in full. A little back story, my husband became self employed with a small business in 2020 and we file jointly. 2020’s taxes were done, but he stopped keeping up after that. It’s been very stressful for me to know my taxes aren’t getting done, so last year I filed married filing separately and did my own.
My concern is, how do I file these back years and get on a payment plan? Do I have to mail all the back tax years in and then how do I know when they are processed and received? I’m so used to doing them online that I don’t know how to do it another way. And then how do I handle and go about getting a payment plan as I know I’m probably going to owe something like $10k for the 4 years with interest and fees and I can’t pay that all up front. Do I just wait like a sitting duck for them to contact me about the money owed?
I need to get this sorted out as my daughter is a freshman in high school and we need to get on track for FAFSA in a couple of years.

You paper-file 2021 and 2022 and check your IRS account to see when they’re received. [FreeTaxUSA.com/2021](http://FreeTaxUSA.com/2021) (and similar for 2022, 2023, 2024) are all available, or there are other options out there too.
For 2023 and 2024, you can e-file IF you have a IP PIN, which you can get on the IRS website for free.
IRS page on payment plans:

Interest and penalties continue to accrue. The failure to file penalty of 25% (5% per month late, up to 25% max) has maxed out for all years in question now. Interest continues to accumulate.
State taxes – different story. Depends on the state(s) involved.
