Baxkground: Full-time college freshman, working ~20 hours/week part-time. First-generation college student.
I was in the process of filing my taxes (late, I know) and trying to claim the AOTC. My plan was to allocate most of my sizable scholarship fund as taxable income so I could maximize the credit. While doing this, I found out I was claimed as a dependent on my parents return.
If I’m not able to claim the AOTC, I may end up owing around $1.1k since I didn’t have any taxes withheld from my job (I was under the standard deduction and also didn’t realize scholarships could be taxable).
Edit: I understand how dependency is defined by the IRS, but my situation feels a bit complicated. I cover most of my own expenses, including health insurance, my phone bill, and all medical costs I’ve had last year. Outside of housing when I was still attending highschool, I’ve essentially been financially independent since graduating high school and have been living with my sister even during breaks. My parents don’t contribute to my college expenses at all.
The issue is I have a pretty difficult relationship with them, so I’m not sure how to approach this or what my options even are at this point. Is there a way to get this corrected, or am I basically stuck with their filing decision?
Parent claimed me as a dependent with no notice and now I can't get the AOTC and I now owe taxes

You are being a bit vague with your living situation in 2025 which makes it hard to know if you really were a dependent or not.
How many months did you live with your parents? Did they feed you? I assume they paid for your health insurance as well and other incidentals.
How many months did you spend at your sister’s place?
You also seem to be conflating your status this year (2026) with your status last year (2025). The return that was due on 4/15 is for 2025.
