Hey! So quick background: I live in SC but work in GA. Previously, I had GA withholding and got a credit from SC for taxes paid to GA. Now, my employer let us know in a few month they will be withholding SC state taxes instead of GA. Does GA have reciprocity for non-residents? It didn’t look promising but i’m trying not to panic

Help: Employer changing state withholding to state of residence (I work in GA live in SC)

This is a little confusing because they should’ve all along them withholding taxes based on where you work

Yes, you will have to file as a nonresident inGA and show how much time you spent working there so start tracking how much of your time you’re spending in Georgia.

No reciprocity. Withholding SC makes sense if you work from home entirely; otherwise it’s a good time to push back and/or job hunt.

I don’t know if this helps, but I work remotely (software engineering) for a contracting company that is headquartered in TX, but my customer and work team is in SD. My company withholds state taxes for my state of residence because that is where I physically work as a remote employee. I only file state income tax in my state of residence (the one my company withholds taxes for all year).

I wonder if you are in a similar situation? If you work remotely from a home office then your company may consider that your state of employment and residence. So you would only file in SC and not GA at all.
