My husband drives for Lyft and Uber. We got slammed this year with federal taxes, so I'd like to start submitting them online on a regular basis. Do I have to do it quarterly, or is it something I could do more frequently, like monthly or even weekly? As you can see I know next to nothing about this so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you 🙂

    How often should I submit estimated taxes?

    1. To avoid penalties, 4 times a year, each quarterly deadline.

      But you could literally pay everyday, every week, month…whatever you want.

      Personally I don’t understand paying more than just the four times…why not maximize any interest gained from holding the cash until it is due?

    2. You have to go them quarterly. You can submit them weekly if you would like but I think 4 payments is a lot easier to keep track of than 52. Especially if you miss any.

      At least quarterly. You can do it more often if you’d like to. If you have a w2 job you can also just up the withholding at your job and not need to make estimated payments.

    4. You didn’t get slammed, you weren’t paying. Hope that helps. 1099 estimated are due quarterly.

      The important thing is not how often you pay the IRS (but at least quarterly), it’s that you set aside the money that needs to go to taxes so you can make the estimated tax payments when they are due.

      Was he keeping a mileage log of every work session? That’s what most drivers do not do. Uber might keep a log of paid trip miles but not of getting from the end of one trip to the pickup of the next. And always write down the odometer reading January 1st because IRS also asks for total miles the vehicle was driven during the year.

    7. The requirement is quarterly. It’s very easy to do. You can do this yourself without any professional advice & fees.

      The IRS website allows you to pay estimate taxes by credit card. There are no forms required to subimt to the IRS for the quarterly estimate taxes. You keep the worksheets for your records. If you are in a 22% tax bracket, then you submit 22% of your earned income that quarter. This aviods a tax penalty for under-payment on the tax year when filing your yearly taxes.

      The estimate due date for quarterly taxes are:

      * April 15- 1st quarter of year
      * June 15-2nd quater of year
      * Sept 15- 3rd quarter of year
      * January 15- 4th quarter of last year
