Hello everyone. I was working with an accountant for my 2025 taxes. She had calculated that I was going to owe “X” amount. She was taking longer and needed more time so she asked to file an extension in case we needed more time. When I filed the extension, it asked me to schedule a payment so I scheduled for “X” amount.
My accountant then finished, the real amount owed (let’s call it “Y”) was much lower than “X”. However, she never told me I needed to cancel the payment I had scheduled for the extension. We didn’t end up needing to “use” the extension.
So now the IRS charged both X + Y. I called my accountant and she said that when the IRS approves the refund, the X amount should be sent back to me.
Is this true? Or do I need to file a 1040-X form? Or something else? I’d like to see what the fastest way of getting the overpayment money back if possible.
Thank you.

Your accountant is right
The IRS doesn’t charge you twice. There will be one tax amount.
You may have paid twice. In that case, the overpayment will be automatically refunded. Wait 2-3 weeks. If it does not get refunded automatically, a phone call will get it released.
