I filed 2025 tax return requesting a paper check for refund(which I think is a default choice if no bank account# is provided), but today I received CP53E notice stating "we couldn't direct deposit your 2025 form 1040 refund".

First, I thought there must have been some misunderstaning on their end, but, after some reading on reddit and IRS website, it has come to my understanding that this is probably part of their efforts trying to phase out of paper check.

I'm fine with adding a bank account, but just want to clarify a few things I'm wondering about. Would appreciate your inputs.

    1. is IRS.gov/Account legit ? It seems obvious, but I just want to make sure as scams are so common nowadays.
    2. When I create an ID.me account, what do I need to have in hands ?

    1. Yes. The IRS account URL is legitimate. The typical id.me enrollment process involves taking a photo of a government issued ID and taking a selfie of yourself. If that doesn’t work, you will need to get on a live video call with an agent to verify you are actually the person on the ID.
