I’m a W-2 employee based in Southern California with total comp currently around ~$500k, with a trajectory toward $700k+ over the next few years. Income is a mix of base, commissions, and bonuses.
Right now I’m realizing I’ve been pretty inefficient from a tax standpoint — my effective rate is coming out around ~45–47%, and I’m not doing any real planning beyond basic filing.
I’m looking for a CPA or firm that:
Works with high-income W-2 earners (not just business owners)
Does proactive, year-round tax planning (quarterly projections, income timing, etc.)
Understands California tax nuances
Can help optimize things like retirement strategies, bonus timing, and long-term planning
I’m based in the Pasadena / LA area but open to firms that work remotely.
Would really appreciate:
Specific firm or CPA recommendations
What you’ve liked (or didn’t like) about working with them
Any red flags to watch out for when choosing someone
Thanks in advance, trying to get ahead of this before my income scales further.
