I was filing my taxes with a TurboTax agent this year and as soon as they were ready to be submitted, TurboTax said that both my Federal and State forms were rejected. I owe $2k to the Federal and $500 to the state (this is important)

Right after this in late March, I was notified by the IRS that someone tried to file a 1040 Fed return using my SSN. I contacted the Identity Theft IRS division and they put the flag on my account and notified the IRS of the false file. They then told me to mail my return in this year because I can't e-file. I mailed my return to the IRS on April 1st. However, I also included my state return 540 in it (my fault).

On April 9th I received a notice from the IRS in the mail saying that someone tried to file a 1040 return in my name. Now this is confusing, because I already got notified a first time about this. This came after I mailed in my physical return. So now I don't know if they sent this notice pertaining to the physical 1040 I mailed to them, or the fraudulent digital filing that someone tried to do with my information. On top of this, I cannot get on the phone with IRS at all to get the clarity I need.

in the midst of this confusion and headache, I realized today that I didn't mail my state return to the California FTB. I've never mailed taxes in before and so this completely did not cross my mind.

According to TurboTax I owe to both the Fed and State. But if I don't know the status of my Fed 1040 filing, how am I supposed to pay? Should I still mail in my State return?

I'm just really confused about all this and not being able to get on the phone with IRS or FTB is frustrating. I don't want to be brought under any penalties or late fees.

Someone tried to file a 1040 with my SSN and now I'm confused
