Title. Few weeks ago I e filed and was rejected, talked to everyone who could've claimed me, and concluded that I indeed was not claimed this year by anyone despite the IRS denying me due to being claimed. What's the next step for me? From the limited info I have gotten I hear I need to file by mail? Also am I SOL as far as deadlines go since the deadline is passed? Or should I be good since I'm experiencing issues? Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

Someone may have fraudulently claimed you as a dependent using your social security number. File your tax return through the US mail rather than e-filing. Also fill out form 14039.

Did someone claim you for 2024? Their preparer may have neglected to remove you.

If you have refunds coming, no penalty for filing late.

      1. Print the return and mail it. If you owe money, you can send it electronically easily enough. The sooner you do that, the less it will cost you. If you get a refund, there is no late filing or penalty fee. If you get a penalty, the info that you sent in an e-file attempt may get the late penalty dropped, but not the 7%/365 that you pay per day as an interest-like penalty.
      2. Get an IRS IP-PIN. That should make that a non-issue in later years. If you get that online, you will have to get the new one online each year. If you want it mailed automatically, you will use a non-online method.

Hate to say it, but the two possibilities are that someone is lying to you OR your identity has been stolen.
