Is the taxable year the same as the calendar year or is it one year ahead or behind?
For example taxable year 2026: do I pay on taxable year 2026 when I do my tax return in 2027?

In the united states, taxes are calculated and owed on a calendar year. You figure out and finalize your taxes the following year.
So, your taxes owed for the year 2026 (Jan 1 2026 – Dec 31st 2026) are generally finalized when you file a tax return by April 2027.
Some people and a lot of businesses operate on a fiscal year which is considered the taxable year.
Overwhelmingly the calendar and fiscal (tax) year are the same.
But there are exceptions. You would know if you were an exception
