I’ve always done my taxes with my parents as a teenager and they use a tax lady. I’m not a dependent anymore so I started filing my own taxes but our tax lady just retired. My family friend recommended a different tax person for us so I started the process. I began middle of March and send them all the necessary paperworks. They charged me $100 for filing and $20 extra after I added on my college’s tax form. I should’ve known something was up when I would reach out to them and not get a response for days but i figured it was busy for them so I waited.
(They’re located in New York and I’m from Ohio so everything was done online through a messaging app)
When tax day rolled around I started to panic. I reached out a few times and eventually they told me my taxes was rejected because I needed a healthcare form which I don’t have. (Long story short with this one the healthcare form they sent out listed me as a dependent for parents but I was filing separately so I need my own form that I couldn’t get)
I kept messaging them and now it’s been over a month and I’ve gotten no response from them. I know I could’ve done it myself but I’ve never done taxes before and it was very daunting to me.
Here’s the thing I’m confused about, I logged on to IRS to check my status and it says refund status unavailable but money has been taken out of my account already. $650 was taken out 4/16 under the name of Ohio Income Tax.
I don’t know what to do now. Should I try filing online by myself? Should I call someone? Can I sue the tax people to get my money back? Any help is appreciated and thanks for reading this long rant lol.
What is my next step after my tax person ghosted me
