Hi!
This is so silly, sorry. If this post breaks any rules, feel free to delete! I'm just looking for some advice here.
I come from a very low income family that does not have a lot of knowledge on the intricacies of taxes and finances, so I'm a bit lost here. I got hired for a summer job in NYC (I'm a NYC Resident) that's requiring me to fill out a NYIT-2104 form. On it, it's asking about allowances and the amount I want withheld from each paycheck. This is a part time position running for about 41 business days. I will be making slightly more than 8k.
I did not file for 2025/this past April because I made less than 15k as a single person. I do not have self employment income. I am claimed as a dependent, am under 24, and I'm a recent college graduate. I'm likely going to grad school in the fall so I assume that means I will count as a student too(?). I will likely not exceed $15k in any sort of income by april 2027 so I won't be filing again.
I'm assuming my best course of action here is to mark down the amount of allowances i'm eligible for that would take the least amount of tax out, but I'm not sure what i'm eligible for because the witholding calc keeps saying I will owe $0 taxes after everything. the form will only let me write a number, so I can't just write exempt. I'm not sure what to put that will maximize my take-home pay.
Any input is appreciated. Sorry for all the stupid questions! Thank you!
