I had 1040 tax prepared by a tax accountant, and I received CP2000 from IRS in August 2025 for amount of ~2000 tax owed with penalty ~200. I did not prepare the tax return and gave all the documented that IRS cited for discrepancy to the tax accountant. Could my tax accountant made a mistake, and in this case, what are my rights? (I paid ~250 to her to prepare the return). Should I have another tax professional to respond to CP2000?

      Did you review the return and your forms to see if it was prepared properly?

      A CP2000 indicates the income or payment information they got, such as W-2s or 1099s, didn’t match what you reported on your tax return. You should have reviewed that before you signed the return. Did you give your preparer all the forms? Log into your account at IRS to see if anything shows up you didn’t know about.

      On the scary end of the scale…did the the preparer sign the return themselves (they’re required to) and hopefully they did not suggest to get paid based on the size of the return (they can’t do that)?

      Do you have an idea of if the IRS is right about what you owe? Any idea what the mistake was?

      You should sent to your tax person.

      Option 1) The tax person made a mistake;

      Option 2) You forgot something.

      A cp 2000 is typically sent because the irs has a w2 or 1099 income that was not retorted on your tax return. Most commonly this because you forgot to give the preparer a tax form like a brokerage or old job or unemployment income.

      Discuss the letter with the preparer to see if the cp2000 is correct. If you gave the preparer all the info and they mistakenly left it off the return then the preparer should pay the penalty portion of the amount.
