Hello, I am new to this subreddit.

About a month ago, I received a letter from the IRS of returning the $1400 to them (I received a direct deposit of the $1400 couple months ago). However, as much as I'd like to pay back the money, I do not have enough money unfortunately to pay it back. I was thinking of calling them first but I don't know on where to start or what to do, and I'm too nervous and scared to call them. I wish I kept the $1400 instead of spending or using it to pay my cc bills.

Any helpful advice and tips would be grateful

    Thank you all!

    1. Contact them and explain what happened, and request that they setup a payment plan. The IRS is scary, but if you contact them and be fully honest, they are usually very helpful.

You can set up a 6 month repayment plan on their website that takes 2 minutes.

    3. I don’t work for the IRS but I do work for a state level tax agency.

Just call them. Your case is just one of thousands like it. You won’t be yelled at or treated like a criminal.

I don’t know what options they may be able to provide to you but you won’t be dealing with angry debt collectors like it seems you may be worried about.
