    1. Did they also (illegally) amend their w4 to not withhold? Because otherwise its mot exactly “not paying taxes” now is it

How much are these people needing to pay? Under a grand, they might get by. I feel like my 60 K would not slip by the irs

    3. Lol no, a very very small percentage of American taxpayers are refusing to pay their taxes. Those same people will also cry foul when they get the IRS notice later in the mail assessing penalties and interest or threatened garnishment.

    4. The US government does not have a balanced budget. Americans not paying taxes does not in any way prevent or hinder the government from spending money. All it does is subject those Americans to underpayment penalties, resulting in them paying *more* money to the government whenever they do pay their taxes.

The IRS does have the option of sending your employer a “lock-in letter” that directs the employer to withhold enough tax. The first step in this process is to send Letter 2802C to the employee, which gives them 60 days to subimit a new, accurate W-4. The the employee does not respond. the IRS will send Letter 2800C/2801C to the employer and employee, respectively. The letters outline the maximum permitted withholding that the employer must apply to the employee, which is usually the single filing rate for their income. This rate lasts for three years.

I remember all the complaints from people in 2019 when they prepared their 2018 tax return and weren’t getting as large of a refund as they were used to getting because the withholding tables had been changed to withhold less.
