So my Dad filed his taxes before me this year. When I submitted my taxes e-file on tax day my Federal was rejected because I was claimed as a dependent on his taxes. I submitted an extension and was approved.
Some info on me: I’m 26, Worked part time for the entirety of 2025, Made around 30k, Live at home with my parents, Pay 250 in rent each month. I was not claimed as a dependent by my dad for the last two years.
His tax guy messed up and claimed me this year. Now my dad is asking me to say I am a dependent on my taxes and he will pay me the difference that I don’t make back.
What are the negatives that can come of doing this?? Can I be technically still claimed as a dependent legally??

Do not lie on your return.
File an accurate tax return and let your dad know you can’t lie.
Irs records are going to show your income, far above the limit for your dad to claim you. It sometimes takes 2 years fir th er m to catch up but them letters start going out.
You cannot be claimed as a dependent and your dad needs to file an Amendment asap to unclaim you. You’re over 24 years old and made more than $5,200 as your income so you cannot be his dependent even if you live with him all year.
You cannot be legally claimed as a dependent. File without checking the “can be claimed as a dependent” box.
As much as it might not feel like it, this will help your dad in the long run. The IRS will be able to see that you make above the amount that a 26-year old can make and still be claimed. If years pass before the IRS sees this mistake, your dad will not only owe that money back, but will owe penalties and interest on the money. If you correct the mistake now, this doesn’t happen.
Too old and you made too much. This so called tax pro is a joke.
