I work for a staffing agency and I pick up per diem shifts (one time shifts) at many different facilities some of these shifts are kinda far away (50 miles from home). From my understanding if I drive back home my travel expenses are not deductible. Though sometimes I’ll have 2 shifts in 2 days at the same facility I’m wondering if I get a hotel room in the town I’m working at if then my travel expenses (travel, room, meals) become deductible?
I’m a W-2 employee.

I’d obviously calculate if this is actually worth it and cheaper than just traveling back and forth but I’m curious is all.
As a W-2 employee, none of your expenses are deductible on the federal return. Some states still allow these deductions, though.
You should ask your employer to pay you for your mileage and reimburse your hotel costs, and maybe provide a per diem for meals; reimbursement for those expenses is tax free (though you then won’t be able to deduct them on your state return).
