A person very close to me has gone to an accountant for the past few years who has filed her taxes. He has (1) claimed credits for her that she does not qualify for (e.g., the Work Opportunity Tax Credit), (2) submitted returns without having her sign those returns, and (3) has never shared copies of the returns he has filed on her behalf.
I learned this after she approached me with an audit letter for 2024. I plan to help her set up an IRS payment plan—she clearly does not get these credits she claimed, and she will owe a substantial amount.
But my question is what to do for 2025, which she’s already filed. I expect that she will be similarly audited at some point. Should she go ahead and file an amended return for 2025? That seems to be the correct option I just need to hear it from someone else.
Should I amend if tax preparer claimed incorrect credits?

She should meet with REAL tax professional to review all years in question and correct as necessary.
Then she should report the unethical fraudulent tax preparer to the IRS. Maybe she can get some relief from penalties.
