Hi Guys,
I paid for an extension of my taxes for 2025. I left the USA in March 2025 because the company I was working for went bankrupt.
While browsing the IRS website, I saw that I need to file a dual-status return. All the CPAs I found are asking me for a minimum of $1K to file 1040NR + 1040. I find it so expensive.
Through Reddit, I saw a few people do it by themselves. I wonder if I can do it by myself. It isn't that tricky, I saw plenty of tutorials that help me with that.
I’m trying to figure out where to start.
Thank you,

If you don’t have complex tax situation, you can do it easily.
Honestly, the $1K fee from CPAs is pretty steep for something you can do yourself. I’ve seen folks take on dual-status returns with some decent resources online. It’s definitely doable, but just be ready for some complexity since you’re dealing with both 1040 and 1040NR.
A good starting point is the IRS website itself for the forms and instructions. There are some video tutorials that break it down nicely, too. I’d say take your time and maybe even practice with the forms on paper first before filing.
What specific parts are you unsure about? Have you looked into any specific tutorials yet?
