10 year CPA so this may be embarrassing to admit but I do not know the first thing about dealing with unfilled tax returns, and admittedly it is not something I care to do. However, I seem to keep getting referrals that need help with these situations and have no clue what to tell them.

What are their options? Where do I find them a CPA that specializes in these situations? I feel bad, especially when it's a child dealing with the affairs of their parent who was delinquent, but I genuinely don't feel competent to find them a solution.

Where do you send clients that need help w/ back taxes?

    1. If you were preparing taxes in the prior years, you should have all of the necessary skills to prepare prior year returns. If you don’t have the tax software for the relevant years, your software vendor will help you.

Its kind of unclear why you think it would be more difficult or different than preparing any other return?

    2. I love a good set of delinquent returns. Five multiple years for the same taxpayer is easier than five different taxpayers. And we charge a premium for the catch-up work. Often results in collections and representation work.

I used to send people to precision tax relief based in Idaho. Idaho is one of a handful of states with accountant client privilege. It helps when lawyers from out of state try to subpoena stuff

I’ve always taken clients with back taxes, confusing taxes, and any type of taxes. I’ve had CPAs, bookkeeping companies and other tax prep businesses send me their clients. If you need someone to send them to, I’ll take them.

Go to one of your local professional CPA groups, and find someone to specializes in doing this work. It’s probably profitable to find a one-man shop who’s only doing this back taxes type of work.

Then set up a referral program, tell him you’ll give him the referrals, but see if I’ll slip you a couple bucks, or a percent of the billing. And you do the same for him when he refers people to you for your special day.
