Hi there! Long time reader first time poster.
I searched for a similar thread regarding this and had no luck- so I thought I'd go ahead and make my own thread. A quick summary of my situation:
I filed my 2025 taxes like normal on January 20th. Got my NY State refund back in a jiffy but had a long, unknown hold on my Federal until Feb 16th- where I got a letter notifying me that they would be holding my refund until I filed my 2022 taxes. Confused- I checked my paperwork and saw that I didn't file all the way for 2022 (got laid off and I owed for that year). This was the first and only time I haven't filed in my ten years of filing, so I quickly mailed everything out on Feb 23rd. NY State was received and filed by the end of March without a hitch. But my Federal, which they claim to have not even recieved until April 1st (six weeks after I mailed them out…) has been in purgatory.
NOW- I am in a bit of a tight money situation and saw that some people in similar situations have been able to get a partial refund early through TAS, so when I called them to see what was going on, the person on the line informed me that my Federal is currently in the Errors department and I should be receiving a notice informing me of the issue in the coming days. Currently, I have received no notices about any issues and the transcripts I've been checking daily haven't changed at all since April 1st.
So long story short- what could possibly be wrong with my federal taxes that'd get it transferred to the errors department if my state return was accepted with no issue? Could the TAS agent have been wrong possibly? Am I missing something obvious? Is them receiving it on April 1st the worst April Fools Joke of my life?? Thank you for reading and AAHHH I just want my refund!!!
Any reason why my NYState return would be accepted, but my Federal wouldn't?

Two different governments. One has nothing to do with the other. The Feds are much more fussy and do a lot more verification before releasing a refund. So the state situation has no relation to federal.
Once your return falls out of automatic processing, and a human needs to be involved, there will be delays. In your example, they wanted your 2022 filed. This pulled your 2025 return out of line in order to wait for 2022 to be fixed. There’s your delay.
