I just received a "Request for Past Due Corporate Tax Return" from the California FTB for 2021.

I did zero business in California in 2021. No income from California businesses, no meetings or any travel there, no employees, only one subcontractor who lived in Florida.

My business has always been in Michigan and my only interaction with California is that in 2010 and 2011, I received money from a California corporation that withheld state tax.  I filed a form 592-B in those years to indicate the amount withheld.

I would just assume this is a clerical error except I have this weird feeling that I was somehow supposed to tell them in 2011 that I was no longer doing business there, or file returns all these years?

Really confusing and I can't get anyone there on the phone. Anyone else in a similar situation? How can I find out why they think I need to file taxes in California?

It just occurred to me that I receive a small royalties check from a publisher that is based in California. Maybe that is the reason?

I wrote that book 20 years ago. Please tell me I don’t have to file 20 years worth of California taxes and pay $800 x 20 for a tiny amount of royalties.

      I appreciate any feedback!
