Into Europe: The EU Mercosur trade deal offers the opportunity to create a new trade zone of 760 million people. But despite being signed in 2019, it has yet to be ratified, and it might never reach that point. Opposition to the deal for the liberalization it would bring to European agriculture and its effects on European farmers have seen widespread protests to farmers. It threatens to undermine the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy.
At the same time, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s weakening of environmental regulation has galvanized opposition: the deal would be going against the European Green Deal.
It raises a question of wether the deal between this group of South American countries and the European Union can pass.
