Biden administration announces sanctions on company behind Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project

U.S. President Joe Biden has pressed ahead with imposing sanctions on the company behind the Russian-connected European energy project, Nord Stream Two.
The move comes as a senior American official says Russian forces around Ukraine are “as ready as they can be” to launch a full-fledged invasion.

Adding to the penalties on Russia for its recognition of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine,… the U.S. has imposed sanctions on the company in charge of building Moscow’s Nord Stream Two gas pipeline.
The White House said Wednesday that it has imposed sanctions on Nord Stream Two AG, a registered Swiss company whose parent company is Russia’s state-run energy giant, Gazprom.
A senior U.S. defense official explained the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin has put 80 percent of the troops he has assembled in a position to launch a possible full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Quoting the unnamed official,… CNN reports more than 150-thousand Russian forces are now assembled around that country.
It added some of the troops are as little as five kilometers away from the Ukrainian border.
In response,… Ukraine’s parliament has approved a national state of emergency.
Kyiv also says several of its government websites were down as a result of a massive cyber attack.
It targeted the websites for the country’s ministry of foreign affairs, parliament as well as some local banks.
Ukraine also appealed to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday to halt what it called Russia’s aggressive plans.

“Active diplomacy, strong political messaging, tough economic sanctions and strengthening Ukraine can still force Moscow to abandon aggressive plans.”

In Europe, EU leaders will hold an emergency summit on the crisis.
Thursday’s meeting comes on the heels of a sanctions package announced by the 27-member bloc that includes limiting Moscow’s ability to raise capital within the EU’s financial markets.
