The Suez Canal is a man-made waterway located in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. The canal is approximately 120 miles (193 km) long and runs through the Isthmus of Suez, a narrow strip of land that separates Africa from the Sinai Peninsula.
The idea of constructing a canal across the Isthmus of Suez dates back to ancient times, but it was not until the 19th century that the project was actually undertaken. The construction of the canal was spearheaded by the French engineer Ferdinand de Lesseps, who began work on the canal in 1859. The canal was completed in 1869, after 10 years of construction, and has been in use ever since.
The Suez Canal has had a significant impact on global trade, allowing ships to avoid the lengthy and often dangerous trip around the southern tip of Africa. The canal has also played an important role in the political and economic history of Egypt and the Middle East, serving as a major transit point for oil and other resources.
The canal is owned and operated by the Suez Canal Authority, which is responsible for maintaining the canal, collecting tolls from ships that pass through, and ensuring the safety and security of the waterway. The canal is a vital artery of global trade, with over 19,000 ships passing through each year and carrying more than one billion tons of cargo.
Despite its importance, the Suez Canal has also been the site of several conflicts and controversies throughout its history. In 1956, the canal was nationalized by the Egyptian government, leading to a military intervention by France, Britain, and Israel. More recently, in March 2021, the canal made headlines when a large container ship became stuck in the canal, blocking traffic and causing a major disruption to global trade.
