In this video, we look into the lithium mining industry, who has seen a lot of growth lately thanks to the boost in demand coming from electric vehicles. After a few words about general considerations when investing in lithium companies and the lithium market, I analyze several lithium stocks, namely:

– Albemarle (NYSE: ALB): the largest lithium company by market capitalization and one of the key players in the market.
– Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (NYSE: SQM): the largest lithium company by production, with a market share of about 20%.
– Livent + Allkem who merged into Arcadium Lithium (NYSE: LTHM + ASX: AKE = NYSE: ALTM). The latest merger in the lithium industry and potentially the 3rd largest company by production and market cap.
– Lithium Americas (NYSE: LAC): the company developing the big Thacker Pass project in the US; a pure-play North American lithium company with lots of interest from General Motors.
– Lithium Argentina (NYSE: LAAC): split from Lithium Americas recently, this company operates one relatively large lithium project in Argentina and owns 2 other projects that are in early stages of development.

Recently, we saw a massive decrease in China’s lithium demand, and overall, the price of lithium is down quite a bit lately. This can open some very good opportunities in the sector, and I believe there are more than a couple of really interesting lithium companies out there, as you are about to see.

As with almost any commodity, lithium is very exposed to China’s demand, because this country alone is responsible for around half of the global demand. If there is any issue with China’s demand for any reason, we can expect lithium prices to be affected, like we see today actually, when China’s demand fell by around 50% in Q4 2023. Now, China also has a massive share of the global lithium supply, and this share is increasing at a very rapid rate. If this continues, I think that finding an independent company that has even a tiny bit of that market can prove to be very valuable in the future.

Of course, we also have to remember the risk of alternatives to lithium in EV batteries for example. When talking about EV batteries, we are still looking at new technologies, and just because lithium is very popular today, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be part of the dominant technologies in a decade or two.
